"Fixing the Great Mistake" is a new Streetfilms series that examines what went wrong in the early part of the 20th Century, when our cities began catering to the automobile, and how those decisions continue to affect our lives today.
But, obviously, the BBMP has a different view, going by the following excerpts from a New Indian Express report:
In an effort to accommodate the ever-increasing number of vehicles at its premises, the BBMP will now invest in a multi-storied parking. In order to provide parking space for its elected representatives, the Palike will soon invite consultants and designs for the multi-storied parking. With the increase in the number of BBMP wards from 100 to 198, the elections will see twice the number of elected representatives, resulting in a manifold increase in the number of vehicles, said an official. “The empty space available at the BBMP premises will be used for the multi-storied parking,” MP Prakash, Chief Engineer (Markets) told Express. Prakash added that the design for the parking lot, which will be able to accommodate a minimum of 500 cars, will be invited by the BBMP in the next few weeks.

Massacre on Mysore road
Very true Murali Sir..its unfortunate that we are concentrating on road widening and other options..instead of addressing the core issue!
A sad example now is Mysore road just after the sirsi circle flyover..they have marked this road for widening and the huge trees(about 50) are being redied for cutting..
They are not sparing the dead either..they are encroaching onto graveyards(yes its yards!) to widen the road!
Bangalore is getting really hot this summer but no one seems to bother and instead of planning inteligent transport we are following a mundane path!
The Diwan of mysore who planted these trees will be crying in his grave for the foolish act of the city dwellers!
Re: Massacre on Mysore Road
Since my office shifted 6 months ago, I've not been Mysore Rd much. It indeed would be a great loss if they chopped those trees off. But, as usual, who is to question the intent of our dear road brigade at BBMP? Or is it the State Highway Department?
Something needs to have been done just west of the fly-over in any case. Cutting trees there might be inevitable. But a much bigger mess still awaits you near the TTMC and Gali Anjaneya Temple. And that fly-over over drain has been taking baby steps for years - see this post. A few weeks back when I visited Vijayanagar, some structures seemed to have finally materialized and there was some activity.
