Karnataka and Railways - Game for a Praja Initiative!?

[Forked off from this Karnataka and Railways budget thread]

p_hebburu avare,

I am kind of disagreement to your one of the stated comment about lobbying for More Railway goodies. I think we need to lobby with different kind of strategy. If the old tricks are employed, may be we may get some KA MP assigned as Union Railway minister. May be we get few more trains etc. But that still may not do justice to Karnataka in totality. Regional imbalances in union budgets are going to continue in same manner unless railways moves away from these piecemeal way of introducing new trains or new lines. This is one of the basic reason for such colossal imbalances and then multiplied by political pulls & pushes making it more worse. Terming this as injustice may not be wrong in some context. Even if you look at the states where it is introduced, it hasn't stimulated any increased economic development in majority cases. What should be an ideal thing to happen is to see a Indian Railways Road Map 2020 or something similar.

How about lobbying with a different kind of ammunition. How about lobbying with some real hard facts, technically feasible plans comprehensively covering the entire state of Karnataka. This spiced up with political backing.

In that context how about we take this up as Praja project and do the following:

  1. Dig out the process the railway department follows for taking up any new line, new train etc? File RTI?
  2. Dig out the information on all projects in Karnataka from on paper to being currently under execution? File RTI?
  3. Compile a list of railway network that exists today in Karnataka.
  4. Compile a proposed new lines that needs to be added to the existing one? May be with objective of connecting all districts in Karnataka.
  5. Compile a list of existing trains that are run currently and new trains to connect all dots in Karnataka
  6. Consolidate all the above data into a Vision Plan 2025 for Railways in Karnataka.

With that ammunition in hand, work with names like NRN, NK, RC etc and other politicians who could pursue this further. We could also work on your suggestion for a signature campaign.

Anybody game for these efforts?

Syed

Hi,
Having read the posts on this forum, I get the feeling that we are indulging in criticism without complete knowledge of what exactly we are criticising. Rather than make sweeping generalisations of "injustice" and the like, let us examine what we have recieved.
1. Bangalore Rajdhani (tri-weekly) : this makes the effective frequency of the Rajdhani daily; fulfilling a long-pending demand.
2. Yesvantpur-Mysore Express : this had been running for a long time as a special train.
3. Mumbai-Karwar Express (tri-weekly) : should benefit the people of U.K. district.
4. Tornagallu-Ranjitpura and Hospet-Swamihalli doubling : will help in transport of iron ore from Bellary district.
What was done in the last year:
1. Bagalkot-Gadag gauge conversion completed and trains inaugurated on the stretch.
2. Bangalore-Mysore doubling completed till Ramnagaram and work between Ramnagaram-Mandya in full swing.
3. Bangalore-Tumkur doubling completed.
So, at present, works in progress are:
1. Ramnagaram-Mysore doubling.
2. Shimoga-Talguppa gauge conversion.
3. Hospet-Londa doubling.
4. Kottur-Harihar new line.
5. Hubli-Ankola new line. (As per media reports, this recently received environmental clearance).
So, SWR seems to have its hands quite full at present! Could someone put up a list of other demands that were "ignored", and what areas of the state they would benefit. With the full facts on hand, we can have a more fruitful discussion.
Above all, please keep in mind that this is an "interim" budget and major expenditure has to be deferred till the new government comes in.

Praja Project? Counting our blessings

Hi Syed,
Anybody game for these efforts?
I am!
2. Dig out the information on all projects in Karnataka from on paper to being currently under execution?
I have mentioned the list of projects currently under implementation in my previous post. For convenience sake, I will reproduce them here:
1. Ramnagaram-Mysore doubling.
2. Shimoga-Talguppa gauge conversion.
3. Hospet-Londa doubling.
4. Kottur-Harihar new line.
5. Hubli-Ankola new line.
6. Hospet-Londa doubling (forgot to mention this earlier).
3. Compile a list of railway network that exists today in Karnataka.

A brief note on railways in Karnataka: The railway network in Karnataka is operated by five railway zones - South Western, South Central, Southern, Central and Konkan. They are controlled by eight divisions - Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Karwar, Solapur (MH), Palakkad (KL), Secunderabad (AP) and Guntakal (AP). 28 out of 29 districts and 23 out of 29 district HQ's are connected by rail. All the lines are broadgauge, except Shimoga-Talguppa which is under conversion. The lines are as follows:

South Western Railway - Bangalore Division
1. Bangalore-Gauribidanur-AP border (single non-electrified).
2. Bangalore-Ramnagaram (double non-electrified).
3. Bangalore-Bangarapet-AP border (double electrified).
4. Bangalore-Tumkur (double non-electrified).
5. Bangalore-Hosur (single non-electrified).
6. Bangalore-Chikkaballapur (single non-electrified).
South Western Railway - Mysore Division
1. Mysore-Ramnagaram (single non-electrified).
2. Tumkur-Arsikere-Birur-Chikjajur (single non-electrified).
3. Mysore-Hassan-Arsikere (single non-electrified).
4. Mangalore-Hassan-Shravanabelagola (single non-electrified).
5. Mysore-Chamarajanagar (single non-electrified).
6. Birur-Shimoga-Talguppa (single non-electrified).
South Western Railway - Hubli Division
1. Hubli-Harihar-Chikjajur (single non-electrified).
2. Hubli-Dharwad-Londa-Belgaum-MH border (single non-electrified).
3. Hubli-Gadag-Hospet (single non-electrified).
4. Londa-Castle Rock (single non-electrified).
5. Chikjajur-Challakere-AP border(single non-electrified).
6. Hospet-Bellary (double non-electrified).
7. Hospet-Swamihalli-Kottur-Harihar (single non-electrified).
8. Tornagallu-Ranjitpura (single non-electrified).
9. Gadag-Bijapur-MH border (sinlge non-electrified).
10. AP border-Bellary (single non-electrified).
South Central Railway - Guntakal Division
1. Bellary-AP border (double non-electrified).
2. AP border-Raichur-Wadi (double non-electrified).
South Central Railway - Secunderabad Division
1.Wadi-Tandur-AP border (double non-electrified).
2.AP border-Bidar-MH border (single non-electrified).
Central Railway - Solapur Division
Wadi-Gulbarga-MH border (double non-electrified)
Southern Railway - Palakkad Division
Panambur-Thokur-Mangalore-KL border (single non-electrified).
Konkan Railway - Karwar Division
Thokur-Karwar-GA border(single non-electrified).
(Source - Indian Railways)
4. Compile a proposed new lines that needs to be added to the existing one? May be with objective of connecting all districts in Karnataka.
In that case, only one line will be needed - to connect Kodagu (Madikeri-Mysore?).
This is my contribution. Now, can someone please do the rest and take this forward?

Railway map of Karnataka

Here is a railway map of Karnataka.  Could not find one which showed double and single lines.

 Some key missing links

Hospet -->Lingsagur-->Yadgir without having to go through Guntakal

Bijapur -->Wadi -->Gulbarga -->Bidar

Shimoga --> Talguppa --> Sirsi -->Hubli (without having to touch Birur)

Tumkur -->Sira --> Chitradurga-->Hospet (without having to go through Arsikere and Chikjajur)

KSRTC will then supplement railways from the nearest railhead.

As far as migration on Bullet Trains go, it is a bit far fetched.  There are enough flights for the rich to migrate on and enough passenger trains and buses for the middle class and poor to come on.

Hi folks,

I created this map to show the existing rail lines in Karnataka, based on an SVG background available on the Wikimedia Commons. the map shows double and single lines as well. This should give us an idea of what we've got and what we need to do.

Two important trains that are missing

ಮೇಲೆ
345 users have liked.

It is an excellent compilation of the requirements.

Two important trains that were needed for Karnataka:

1. Shiomoga - Bangalore Limited Stop day train (Intercity / Janashatabdi) just stopping at Tumkur, Arsikere, Birur covering the distance in probably 4-5 hours helping Shiomoga residents to come to Bangalore, finish off work and return back the same day. This is our ChiefMinister's place and he should have followed up with Central Government.

2. Bangalore - Mangalore Day Train atleast 1 train leaving Bangalore in Morning and reaching Mangalore at afternoon. Again leaving Mangalore in afternoon and reaching Bangalore in the night.

1) Extension of Talguppa to Honnavar(where it will meet the Konkan railway ) is more viable option. This extension is also mooted by by BSY too soon after he bacame CM,it may become a reality soon, in such case it must connect world famous Jog falls. As for Sirsi, it is closer to Haveri and also connection between Ankola and Hubli is going to benefit Sirsi too.

2) More urgent need is to operationalise line between Shravanabelagola to Bangalore. Current circuitous route via Mysore is taking too long time. Additional benefit is to connect with tourist place that is Shravabelagola.

Dear Sir,

If the TALAGUPPA-HONNAVAR Railway Line implement, below will be the advantages.

1.      It would provide a vital rail link to the important commercial centers such as Shimoga, Chikmagalur, and Davangere for the transportation of goods to northern India.

2.      It will provide a faster and shorter route to Mumbai for people in most parts of southern Karnataka.  It can save time, (time is Money).

3.      It forms a vital link between Bangalore and Mumbai and Goa.

4.      It will increase exporting opportunities of agricultural products like Coconut, Areconut & Rice to northern India.

5.      It will develop regional economy.

6.      It will change living of standard of local peoples.

 7.      If this project implemented, at least 1000 families get Job & Bread.

8.      It will also increase the revenue.

9.      Talaguppa will be no more dead end station.

The distance between Bangalore to Panji(Goa) via Mysore & Mangalore is 783 KM.The distance between Bangalore to Panji(Goa) via Shimoga & Talaguppa is only 553 KM.

Bangalore-Shimoga..............274

Shimoga-Talguppa..................83

Talguppa-Honnavar.................55

Honnavar-Madgaon...............141

Total........................................553   Kms.

If we use Shimoga & Talaguppa route to go Panji (Goa) from Bangalore we can save more than 230 KM.We can save Travel Time. We can save Travel Fare also.

The NG line was closed for traffic way back in 2004 for guage conversion between Bangarpet and Yelahanka. Later on only the stretch between Yelahanka to Chikkabalpur and Bangarpet to Kolar was converted to BG. Haven't found any updates on the remaining stretch of conversion. Last I heard was that IR has put the conversion on hold(cold shelf). Does anyone have any new updates/developments on this.

My Take on Rationalisation of Railway Development in India

ಮೇಲೆ

Friends,

I notice the main concern seems to be of getting new railway line connections or converting metre gauge to broad gauge.

How about paying some attention to quality and kind of facilities that are being provided by the Railways? When can we expect better / cleaner and well lit railway platforms, clean toilets, proper seating arrangements for waiting passengers, more organised vending of wares and general upgradation of entire layout including car parking facilities, porter availability and proper sign boards etc?

The Bangalore Metro Railway is planning air conditioned waiting rooms, platforms etc. Can we do something to ensure it does not become a one week wonder?

Can there be some method in the madness?

Also useful would be some data that was collected and tabulated to make the case.

A few projects/Trains which i feel are a complete necessity.

1.Nelamangala to shravanabelagola on the new hassan mangalore line should be completed on priority. as this will release the load on the trunk line.

2.Doubling of track between hassan to Kukke Subramanya is also an important priority as millions of people visit this place and the shirady ghat section is in one big mess.Railways need to take the  project seriousl and take efforts to link this place to other parts of the country.

3.From the earlier news article about dropping of projects like tumkur- chitradurga new line .Atleast a token amount needs to be spent to keep the project alive.More allocation can happen in the coming years.Apsirations of people of this backward region cannot be ignored

4.Garib Rath to Shirdi needs to be made daily.

5.Overnight express between Hubli and pune.

6.Fast completion of Gadwal-Raichur Railway Line.

7.Intercity between Hubli-Bellary. and Raichur-Gulbarga,Bangalore -Davanagere InterCity.

8.Increasing frequency of Mangalore day train to 7 times from the present 3 times a day.

9.Karwar-Bangalore New train via Bhatkal, Mangalore, 3 times a week atleast should be introduced in the current budget.

10.Faster Implementation of electrication by having a CORE-Railway electrification office in karnataka.

11.Hubli to Hospet Doubling.

12.Hubli  Coach Building Workshop capacity  should be increased by  huge additional investment.

13.Electrification of Bangalore to Hubli with Line doubling

Can we have a breakdown of projects as per the regions  like North Karnataka,West Karnataka,South Karnataka,East Karnataka as this would help us understand better.

Mangalore to Delhi via hassan will never happen atleast until we have doubling of the section between mangalore and arsikere.

Better option is to run direct train from Hassan/Shravanabelagola to Delhi passing through Arsikere,Davanagere,Hubli,Gadag,Bijapur. We need to have atleast one train from central karnataka to the National capital.

People of karnataka cannot make fresh demands until we have a trunk line (Trunk Line means Electrified & Doubled railway line). We need to have one main trunk line between  Bangalore to Mumbai Via Arsikere and Hubli,Belgaum,Pune. This is very critical for the development of south western part of the country and is integral to the growth of western and south indian states of Karnataka ,Goa,Maharashtra and Kerela.East india has highly developed due to the trunk line between Coimbatore to Kolkota Via chennai,Vijayawada,Vishakapatnam,Bhubaneswar.

But unlike the Coimbatore-->Madras-->Vijayawada-->Howrah track the traffic on the mangalore-arisikere strech is quite less. Owing to this we can have the Mangalore-Delhi train via Hassan and Hubli providing good connectivity to Hubli and reducing the demand for Karnataka Express in the Solapur-->Delhi section. If that is not posible then Swarnajayanthi can be made thrice a week or daily and route diverted via Gadag and Solapur. Anyway Goa express provides a daily connectivty on the northern part and hence this train can run in this strech.

Has my station come and gone?

“It is quite surprising that the members on the Railway Advisory Board have not given a serious thought to this problem.”

Railways specializes on running dabbas designed pre-1947. I would like to see a list of actual improvements that have been made to the rolling stock post independence beyond changing the seats from wood to cushions.

City station: Recipe for a stampede

On an average over 1.5 lakh people use the Bangalore City Railway Station everyday.

Has there been any efforts to remodel this station to handle this many passengers? Has the new TTMC unvieled just a few days ago & Metro interchange coming up on the other side integrated to this terminal? If so how?

There is a crying need for planners to think integration at planning stage. One single underpass integrating all SWR platforms with the new bus TTMC & metro is not rocket science by any stretch of imagination

The current underpass from BMTC side to the Station & the station platform underpass need to be connected.
