The first PKN (Volume 11) in Bangalore this year will be Trash Talk.

Bangalore has begun to fight its garbage problem, but weren't we all already?

This PechaKucha Bengaluru will see speakers dive into the depths of the discarded, pulling out stacks of critical and cultural debris: garbage collection, scrap art, city planning, rubbish music, trashy movies and other things from the dumpster.  From the serious to the arcane, the joyful to the profane, this grown-up version of show-and-tell - 20 slides for 20 seconds each - will be sure to leave you breathless (not to mention the cheap drinks and great conversations!)

Please join us on for an evening of sharp and thought-provoking discussions.

Date: Friday, 15th February 2013

Time: 7 pm to 9.30 pm

Place: JAAGA, Double Road, Bangalore ..www.jaaga.in

Wish I could from Mysore...but...??  However, as a JnNURM committee member on Solid Waste Management for Vision Statement 2020, I request that the following suggestions be discussed:

1. We are all made of dust(garbage) so, the waste we produce is recycled, manured in soil, foodgrains grow, we eat and produce more waste.

2. But we also get diseases if the garbage is not treated properly and turned into other forms of reusable products.

3. Identify kinds of solid waste in different parts of the city; deal with them locally - manure it in parks, supply it to nearby homes for gardening/growing roof top vegetables, or parks in govt. lands either aerobic or anaerobic manner, set up bio-gas plants use for producing electricity, All these can be done at zonal / ward level and PEOPLE WHO LITTER SHOULD NOT HAVE OBJECTIONS because it is their trash, in their area and the by-products are for them to make use.

4. Segregated dry waste can fetch money - use rag pickers (the unpaid scavengers), give them incentives, use house-maids (they mix the house hold waste without concern) for segregation.

5. Use bio-waste - street swept dry leaves, twigs etc, mix them with cow dung, saw dust etc., as bonding medium, press them into cakes, dry them in solar heat, supply to needy industries (one problem here is - smoke - but it can be overcome by using them in improved brick lined kilns for optimum usage of heat produced).

5. Use E-Waste to create E-Bricks - Pound whatever e.waste that is found in the garbage dump, pound it into bits and pieces in a nearby central location, create a mix of bitumen, sand and cement, pour enough of the e.waste bits and pieces, mix well and let solar heat dry them to create e.bricks; second method, pour the e.waste bits and pieces into hollow concrete blocks that are used for construction of partitions etc,  This way, we can lock up the e.waste on a permanent basis.  I have checked up the heat/safety aspects and found that there is no chance of any gamma rays escaping from the concrete blocks that may harm humans/animals.
