Civic Sense

There are several things that bother me about construction activities in Bangalore. These include the blatant flouting of building rules, and the apparent disregard for the safety of the public and the neighbours. The corporation guys are mainly in the picture at the beginning and the end for their pound of flesh.

House constructions are no different. Building materials and debris are on the road and if thats not bad enough, they end up clogging the drainage as well.

Theres this house being built near where I live. The guy has conviniently built his watchman's shed jutting out onto the road. I asked one of the neighbours if he had complained. He said he did. Both the owner and the corporation guy told him to "Adjust".

It is the immediate

It is the immediate neighbours who suffer due to construction. My friend had to vacate his house after he was diagnosed with severe rhinitis caused by fine cement used in a building next to his house. Doctors warned him that if he stayed there too long, he will become an asthmatic! There are no rules to safeguard public health from pollution caused by construction, even though the pollution control laws stipulate tight control. But who cares about all these? Right from dumping of sand, construction activity of any size is a major public health hazard witn drains blocked by sand and silt, roads encroached by granite stones and labourers, who at any time can turn into robbers and rapists. Bangalore is dead. No rules, no administration, simply nothing.

There is more to civic sense

I believe one can gauge the civilisation of an individual by how s/he keeps his room, a company by how it keeps its toilets and a country by how it keeps its roads. I began in a small way contributing to improving the civic sense in road behaviour in Bangalore by suggesting a series of steps in process, systems and behaviour. Come join me in this movement. Good writings there George! Would you be willing to move that blog here? If we do all of this together, we have a better shot at getting to something on the ground.
