Since the new government has taken charge, no week passes without hearing some news or the other about new works to develop Bengaluru city.

To ensure smooth flow of traffic in the central business district, the State Cabinet on Thursday decided to upgrade seven major roads in the city at a cost of Rs. 78.83 crore.

Addressing presspersons here after a Cabinet meeting, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra said bids would be invited under Tender SURE (Specification for Urban Road Execution) project for road upgradation works.

Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy on Saturday said the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) would construct seven new bus terminals in the city under the public private partnership ( PPP) model. These terminals called as Traffic Transit Management Centres (TTMC) would come up in Hebbal, Jayanagar, Kathriguppe, Yalahanka, Electronic City, Chikkabettahalli and Kalasipalya.

A thousand deadlines - to rid the city roads of potholes - have been set and missed, and here comes another one, this time by home minister K J George. The government is mooting handing over the maintenance of some arterial roads to private players (as in the case of Vittal Mallya Road), besides the feasibility of having a monorail project.

The Karnataka government is drawing up a Rs 2,100 crore project with loan assistance from Asian Development Bank, to develop and upgrade eight city clusters around Bangalore to woo investment and ease the load on the State capital.

The city clusters proposed to be developed are Nelamangala, Magadi, Anekal, Bidadi, Dabaspet, Harohalli, Devanahalli and Hoskote, Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake told reporters here.

Everybody in CM's cabinet seems to have different interests and are pushing different projects for Bangalore city. Though one should be elated with this news but serious questions arise.

  • Should there be a single person in charge for Bangalore city?
  • Ramlinga Reddy was given the district charge, than why the home minister, UDD minister keep announcing the projects for city?
  • Free run for all?
  • Am I missing something here?

In all this we hardly see any progress. More over, nobody seems to champion the cause of "Suburban Rail". Seems like an orphan left on the pavement outside Vidhan Soudha!

METRO - Politicians interests!

"...State Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundurao, Bangalore South MP Ananth Kumar and Mayor Sathyanarayana among others, joined by BMRCL officials and inspected the status of Metro works on the underground stretch..."

It's a full house from politicians (from both sides of spectrum) inspecting METRO works. Wish they could spare few moments for other projects like Suburban Rail, Pedestrian Infrastructure, Bicycle Lanes/Stands etc.

Ministers, MPs, can you spare few moments for projects other than METRO?

I dont think there is any one person who has any idea as to what is going on. All they do is announce these great projects - many of which are really terrible - and only execute those which can make them and their friends some money. For instance, the Tender SURE projects seem like a good idea - but they have been talking about these for years - the point is that if roads are well made then contractors cannot get money for remaking them - so whenever they have tenders for Tender SURE, no one responds.

On the other hand, they announce disastrous projects like the Maramma circle underpass - something completely unnecessary and given that the CNR Rao underpass is still in limbo - its ridiculous. And then underpasses/grade separators on Chord Road. I drive/bike there several times a week - and even though the road is bad in parts traffic flows. Sure, there are some traffic lights at 10th Cross etc. but there is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to build a grade separator there.
