Work is on, many have confirmed. June 2010 is being comunicated as the planned end date for remaining work. Residents or commuters of the area should post pictures here to keep tab on the work, so that all get to know if June 2010 date is realistic.

Given all the new information, there is no need for planning a protest right now, let us wait till end of May. Sounds good?

 Hi,

Yes, for sure work is in progress.

Apart from the work next to police station, over the past week, two iron girders (more like scaffoldings) have come up between the tracks (cant figure out whether they are some kind of support for erection work or will they stay there for ever!).

I haven't had chance to take photographs; but, will try to share in the next couple of days!

Cheers.....Surya

Will be fun to record the critical part of work - putting that long span over the temporary support structures. Should ask them when they plan to do it. I am sure it will be done in the night. We can go record with our night cams!

Latest update about Kadugodi ROB

Hi,

Here is a mail in circulation in Chaitanya group.... I haven't physically checked; but, looks like a good update :)

Over the weekend, will try to take some snaps and share!

Cheers...Surya

The wait is almost over – after years of staring at the ramps of the ROB that went nowhere – we're happy to report that the first piece of steel girder over the rail lines was put in place at 1:30 AM on 26-March-2010.

The work started just past midnight after the electric lines were disconnected from mains over most of the tracks. 2 tracks on the ashram side were still operational. A Huge crane was brought in and locked in place at around 12:30 AM. The crane did a dry run – turning a full 360 degrees with its lifting arm fully extended to ensure that it did not damage any electric lines. A big truck brought the first piece of the steel girder ( 16 mts long ) along the crane and then the actual work started. The huge steel girder was hoisted up, turned, expertly guided between the electric lines and placed safely in its designated place. The entire operation was beautifully orchestrated by a crew of around 50 people from railways and the contractor. I know it sounds a bit simple but considering he weight that the crane was carrying and the narrow distance between the electric lines – this thing should be on Discovery Channel.

The site engineer shared some information with us – here a brief of what we learned :
- There will be 2 steel girders laid over the railway tracks. Each girder will be 42 meters (m ) long.
- Each girder will have 3 pieces, 2 pieces of 16 m each ( these start from the end of the ramps ) and a middle piece of 10 m.
- The plan is to put the first 16 m piece ( kadugodi side ) and the middle ( 10 m ) piece in place today.
- Tomorrow night they will put the 3rd 16 m piece ( ashram side ) in place.
- Once all 3 pieces are in place they will be welded and riveted together.
- Once this monolith is ready, it will be shifted by a few meters ( parallel to it's current position ) , so that the temporary support structure can be used to assemble the 2nd girder.
- Once both the long 42m girders are in place – they will be cross connected with more steel and a steel sheet will be laid over them and that will form the base of the eventual road.

We also learned from people at the site that there might not be any weight limit on the ROB – meaning that school buses may be able to go over the bridge.

Work in full swing?

I hear that the level crossing has been close for a few days. The crossing may or may not open tomorrow (was supposed to shut only for a week), but there is a chance that the bridge may be ready by May itself, few weeks ahead of June 1 deadline (which is not really an official one).

Subbu and Sudipto talk some detail on this citizenmatters article (from Subbu himself)

Subbu:

I spoke to Kumar, MD of KPR/Balaji. He says they have asked for 6-days of closure to launch the girder which will start tomorrow midnight.

In reality he says morning traffic will be blocked for the first two days of the 6-days and after that for peak hours they will open the line.

During blockage, the Channasandra Road<-->Hope Farm is the alternative route.

Sudipto:

Subbu,
I walked up to the shed last night and talked to one of the supervisors. Wanted to know how long the level crossing would be closed. I got a different and interesting story. He said that the LC is closed for good. The commute in that route will only start once the bridge is really complete. He added that there will be footbridge connecting the bustand to the other side and that the platforms of whitefield station will be extended to the point where the LC is there right now.
The Bridge in his estimate is May end/June for deployment.

I think I would go there myself tomorrow evening to get some details from the workers.

Kadugodi ROB will be insufficient

up
219 users have liked.

There have been comments about the ROB - if it really will be sufficient in width. Roads at both ends of the bridge are much wider than the bridge & very large number of apt complexes have been springing up on the other side of the bridge (Sai Baba ashram side).

Unless Metro is extended upto Kadugodi (adjacent Whitefield SWR station & Bus terminus), the bridge will become a bottle neck soon since it will have only two lanes. Also, the manned level crossing will be permanently closed once the bridge has been completed (similar to Lingarajpuram, Banaswadi rd, etc). Thus, two lanes will have to cater to all traffic.

I think railways need to start planning another bridge (adjacent the existing one) to provide for increased capacity soonest.

Relocation of Kadugodi Bus Stand

up
160 users have liked.

Now it is expected that Railway Overbridge at Kadugodi will be completed soon. It is the time to think about extension of Volvo bus service at least upto Safal Market as lot of residential layout are upcoming in this stretch. Kadugodi bus stand can be relocated somewhere near Safal Market where the land prices are definitely cheaper as compared to the existing location of bus stand.

If the service is extended beyond Kadugodi Depot / Stand It would be beneficial for the resident who will use the buses more which will also generate more revenue for BMTC.

An email has been sent to BMTC on 16.04.2010 in this regard.

Missed their date?

Doesn't look like the bridge will be ready in June. But work is definitely on, movement seems slow, but might be for technical reasons.

BTW, The complaint I had filed on DPAR website has generated lots of responses from government departments.

  • First I got a letter from DPAR itself saying that they will fwd the grievance to railways.
  • Then I got a letter from railways saying they will forward to BBMP.
  • Then, I got another letter from BBMP which sort of says they will send details of work status once they get it (from SW railways?).

So basically, 3 months after filing a grievance at DPAR website, I am impressed with the grievance process - so many letters to engage the complainant. But no real information, or promises in any of them.

Hi,

Have been hearing about 8th July 2010 (yes, the year is correct) as the Inauguration date for the Kadugodi ROB.

Anyone knows, if this true?? I have also heard lots of buzz about ongoing road work, etc.

Cheers....Surya

Hi Surya, They already put

Hi Surya,

They already put Tar on one side of the bridge (Hopefarm side),   may be during the weekend they might put Tar on other part (Ashram Side). Any left over work like Painting, cleaning work can be done in 3 days. So I think 8th of July is reasonable date for the Inauguration.
Any other members have any other updates on this?

BTW,  I am just wondering how they are going to erect electric poles. I don't see any provision for erecting the electric poles.

Anyone has any idea about this?

Thanks,
Sridhar Challa.

bridge is safe?!

According to this thread on citizen matters (read through the comments), the Chief Engineer of the Railways declared it safe.  It is pending some kind of communication process between the Railways, BBMP and the traffic police to be formally opened.

Look for comments by Subramaniam Vincent, the editor of Citizen Matters who followed this matter relentlessly.
