Namma Metro: Authorities placing optimism it neither promises nor deserves

Metro Rail
By M. A. Siraj and Khader B. Syed
It was in June 2006 that the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the Namma Metro. It was by far the largest urban infrastructure project taken up for Bengaluru whose population is projected to peak to 19 million by 2031.

Whitefield and Namma Metro

Metro Rail

Its been the bane of the slum that Bangalore has become that we do not have any credible mass public transport options in the city even after many years and many thousands of crores!

Its almost 10 years that the metro dream started in Bangalore and only parts of it is reality today. That reality is also far from ideal!

Metro Rail

Please sign in this petition addressed to Transport Minister, GoK, MD BMTC and MD BMRCL to introduce buses from Byappanahalli Metro Station to ITPL and Silkboard. What we need is the extension of Tin Factory Buses from Silkboard to Byappanahalli which is hardly 2 kms more.

Namma Metro and its ills!

"There is no effort from the government to crack the whip on BMRC, whose bosses haven't made any extra efforts to chase contractors and get work done. For the contractors, Metro work is a learning process.

Before Phase 1 Metro Go Live - Lot could be done

Metro Rail

Government of Karnataka planned for Bangalore Metro 11 years back, way back in 2003 and the actual work started only in late 2007. Bangaloreans could get first ride of Meto in late 2011, after 4 years of start of project for only 7kms. Second stretch of Reach 3 covering 11kms was opened after 2.5 years in March 2014.

Metro to ITPL

Metro Rail

Sanjeev brought out a very valid point on how access to ITPL/whitefield is going to get affected in the next coming years because of the metro construction there.

It is beyond doubt that we need the metro going there and should have happened years ago as part of phase I itself..but it will be happening now..

Incremental Metro Extension in Phase 2

Metro Rail

Metro Phase 2 works are going to start very soon. But how long it would take? Phase 1 which started in 2007, saw the light in 2011 partially. For complete Phase 1 to complete, it would be end of 2015 or even 2016. Almost close to 9 years. Phase 2 in the phase 1 pace might take another 9 years. If the work starts now in June / July, it might complete somwhere in 2023. comment guidelines
