Shirady Ghat damaged again!

We never seem to learn.... Shirday ghat is back to square one.

Neither the Bus Lobby want Trains to Mangalore nor does the Iron Ore/Lorry Lobby want a freight corridor. Both want to desperately use Shirady Ghat. This Shirady Ghat fiasco has become a symbol of how powerful lobbies have become in our "people's republic" of India. We we as a strong nation can rock America and the rest of the world by signing a nuclear deal, we do not even have to power to curtail lobbies in Karnataka.

Rationalising and Reforming Bus routes - case study

This is presented in two parts -

First a 10 page summary of a recent e-mail brainstorming over how bus routes in Pune can be rationalised. My arguments are presented as AJ in the document - http://better.pune.googlepages.com/Rationalising_bus_routes_in_Pune.pdf

Keep the saarige, let go yelli-iddira

Understanding competition as a/the solution for public transit. Muralidhar rao's praja post is a starting point for the discussion on competizing public transport. The other day, during the PTWG meeting, when the issue of the pathetic condition of BMTC's website and demise of yelli-iddira came up, he broke into an impassioned and yet articulate speech. I cannot recollect his exact words, but his basic point was that BMTC lacks any competitive or regulatory pressure and hence the pathetic state of those services. The only way to get service levels to improve is to open its domain for competition. I have heard his basic position many times, but to hear him make his case in person was a friends, countrymen and romans moment for me. In any case, his speech got me thinking ...

Example of BMTC Local Shuttles for Bannerghatta Road

BusPublic Transport

Hello All,

Here i am once again, i had promised long back to explore more on problems with BMTC in bannerghatta road. So here are some of the major problems.

BMTC busses currently ply only from the main bannerghatta road and it does not penetrate the interiors of bannerghatta road. Interiors on either side of bannerghatta road is pathetic with no proper asphalt. It seems to me that no one has taken interest in improving the conditions these roads. Most of the roads have been occupied by petty shops making the interior existing roads small.

BMTC Bus stops - Official and unofficial

As i drive daily to work - (i live off Old Madras Road (OMR) and my workspot is near the Bangalore dairy), it is frustrating to see the haphazard bus stops of BMTC, that has a severe impact on traffic. Let me give a couple of examples in my route.

Public transport (BMTC) - what is needed to improve it? Your thoughts

One of the things that Bangalore lacks is a good integrated public transport system as of today. Namma Metro promises to improve things but is a few years away. Till then we depend on BMTC for public transport.

BMTC has changed a lot over the last 5-6 years. It (at least according to the website) operates a fleet of 5000 buses and carries about 30 lakh passengers a day (if one person makes 3 trips a day - it is 3 passengers). however, it still has a long way to go.
