Praja related

Effective today, we are introducing some changes to the way users write posts on Praja. Starting today, all users will be able to post blogs on Praja.

Moreover, we will also stop new forum topics from being added. The old forum posts will remain accessible. We have introduced these changes to reduce the confusion between Forums and Blogs.

We have also introduced 'Categories' for the posts. The current categories are tentative and we can change them based on your feedback. We will appreciate your help in drawing up a exhaustive 'category tree'. Please leave a comment below. We have also made it easier to choose 'Where' and Categories while writing the post.

All users can now also upload files with their posts directly from their desktops. These can be images or documents. Please note that there is a limit of 1MB for file each file and a total of 5MB of total space for each user. For users who have a high number of Praja points, the 5MB limit is extended to 20MB. [We will post a comment below explaining how to upload images and files].

We hope you like these changes. Please let us know what you think either through comments or by mailing "tech at praja.in"

How to attach files and images to your posts/comments

up
252 users have liked.

When you are writing a blog, you will see 'File attachments' link just below the main text area. You can click on it to expand it.

You can click on 'Browse' button and select the file you want to upload from your computer.

Clcik 'Attach' button and wait for the file to be uploaded. You can now Save the post as usual and the files will appear attached below your post.

For attaching images, although the above method can be used, you can also follow an alternative path. This path will insert the images within your blog post instead of providing a link to the image at the bottom of you post.

To insert an image in your post,

  • Click on the small image frame icon on your rich text editor.
  • In the pop-up window, click 'Browse server' button.
  • Another window pops up listing your uploaded images (if any) from previous posts.
  • Click on 'Upload' link at the top and then 'Browse' button to select the file from your computer. Click 'Upload'.
  • Click on 'Send to FCK Editor' link after the upload is finished. Make sure you have selected the newly uploaded file from the list below before cliking 'send to FCK editor' link
  • You will come back to previous pop up window with your image. You can adjust the properties of the image if you wish to.
  • Click 'OK' and your image will be inserted in your post.

We realise that this is not a very straightforward way to insert images. We are working on newer and easier way and will update you once we get it working well.

A commendable work by the tech team

It is a positive move to do away with the forum option now on words. This makes PRAJA a forum of individual bloggers. This is a much desirable change which was waiting to happen perhaps.

Now the site has exclusive file and image space for each of the members. This is great news. There hardly any thing more to wish for the time being.

Blogs and forums

You have done great work, but I jus wanted to put in my opinion. Forums are more suited for discussion in my opinion, and blogs are more for communication, like this link www.endusersharepoint.com/. May be it is an old view point, and in Praja with Categories blogs could work as discussion topics also.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words! Hope you enjoy the new features.

The 'category' list is currently incomplete and will appreciate your inputs on what different categories we should have.

@abidpqa, you have a very valid point. We had to do this change in spite of it because of these reasons

  1. A lot of our users are not really very tech savvy and we received feedback indicating that the Forums v/s blog was confusing. This was our attempt to reduce the confusion.
  2. It is technically difficult (due to code maintenance issues) to get the 'look and feel' of a Forum like skyscrapercity using the backend software we are using. Hence our earstwhile forums looked very similar to blog posts. We did not see much point in having a forum that does not look like a forum.
  3. Forums need fixed 'buckets' to be created and it is very hard to get a global structure of forums that would reflect the needs of all different cities as praja grows beyond Bangalore. The categories on the other hand are easily expandable.

Coming up next: a new look and feel Praja.

We are working on a new design to make it easier to read posts and find content you want. Keep watching this space!

My suggested list for categories under blogs/forums

up
233 users have liked.

E&OE

Reason for suggesting these are:  Since my entry into Praja, I find quite a number of Prajas are having expertise in various faculties and many of them are tech savvy.

These categorisations are only suggestive and if there is any duplication, please edit and consider inclusion.

Civic Participation,
Democracy,
Ecology,
Elections,
Energy,
Environment and Nature,
Government,
Governance,
Human Resources,
Issues and Causes,
Life Sciences,
Media,
Lifestyle and Living,
Science and Technology,
People,
Politics,
Polls and Surveys,
Public Relations,
Research & Analysis
Sociology

Secondly, in my uploaded image on Garbage, a hyperlink has been provided. My suggestion : is it possible to get the image on the screen along with the post so that its effect will be immediate - or else, after reading the post, Prajas will have to download the image and corelate it to the subject.
