Mono off the track again

Metro RailTraffic

Does not seem long while since we were happy to see some traction with Mono rail. Even bids were being evaluated for Mono. Before we could say 'cheers' the first blow came when BMRC said Metro is too much to handle. Now, the project seems to be totally off the track with the Government changing it mind on how they want the project to be tendered.

DH reports that Karnataka Government will now adopt its latest 'favorite' Swiss Challenge method for the mono project. What this means is that the Government can award the contract to any contractor and other contractors will then be allowed to challenge the first one.

What this means is another period of hiatus for Mono until the Government decides whom to favor. Looks like the mono ride is not all that smooth at all.

Endgame: I am only guessing here but I think SKIL/GIC will soon bid for Mono project.

i dunno why it has caught their fancy, but from what I understand Swiss Challenge comes with a rather poor track record. WRT, mono, metrail and that Malaysian team seem to have a lobbying power disproportionate to their capability and record. if i'm not wrong, even Bombardier, a provider of mono, thinks basing entire city's network on mono is a rank bad idea.

I am also opposed to Mono since capacities are only about a third or a fourth of what Metro can ferry. I strongly believe that Mono along Ring road is an absurd idea - it will probably reach saturation even before completion & commissioning, with the heavy growth all along ORR ! The best option would be to install a Metro system all around the ORR, with connecting laps (total about 90 km). This together with 'through the core' lines should provide good connectivity. Mono can be used for certain purposes though - like, from IIM to Bannerghatta Nat'l Park, to new Int'l airport & from Mysore road terminal to the entertainment zone in Bidadi. Certainly not for ORR - which is threatening to become an abnormally high growth sector in the city.
