Need Pedestrian overbridge at Kadugodi Railway / Bus Station area

Infrastructure

Request to Railway authorities to consider a pedestrian over bridge / BMTC to extend the Volvo Buses to the other side of the new Over Bridge / and to provide more electric lighting at Kadugodi Railway Station area.

With the arrival of the over bridge facility at Kadugodi/Whitefield area residents are now facing a new problem. Public travelling from and to Kadugodi bus station are facing insurmountable difficulties.  Most of the time, one or two goods trains are parked across the railway gate, fencing the entry gate from Kadugodi end. In addition, digging of drain is restricting people crossing over. To add more there is absolutely no light and complete darkness prevail at night.  All these make  public to risk their life and property while crossing the railway gate to reach either side.

Problem is greater for women carrying children, old/handicapped/sick people and those carrying luggage.

The Kadugodi Bus station is very convenient to all and majority of the public who uses it live on the other side of the bus station.  Everyone will agree that it is impractical for pedestrians to cross over by using the fly over, which has become dangerous even for motorists due to darkness and displaced road dividers.

Could the Railway authorities kindly consider addressing this issue affecting a large population who depend on this route by providing a foot over bridge

Secondly, could BMTC extend the bus routes, more particularly volvos, to the other side of the railway gate.  There are several buildings and residential complexes coming up on this side and both BMTC  (by way of added revenue) and public (by safe and convenient transport option) could benefit from this move.

I humbly request the authorities along with the Corporator and Legislator/ MP ofKadugodi area to consider the following items (request) and make this development made available as early as possible.:

Request to Railway authorities to consider a pedestrian over bridge / BMTC to extend the Volvo Buses to the other side of the new Over Bridge / and to provide more electric lighting at Kadugodi Railway Station area.

I hope those who are from Kadugodi area will feel the necessity for an immediate requirement of this and support this request.

Sincere regards,

Ramesh Menon

Ramesh has raised a very important point. Railway / BMTC officials must wake up and provide proper and much needed facility highlighted in this article. This will not only make it convenient for people but also safe...

Can write to ctmobmtc at gmail dot com regarding the Volvo extension. 4-5 people write with a simple request, they should take note.

For the railway bridge, may have to call and tell South Western Railway. Or who exactly "owns" the Road overbridge? Same agency could be asked for a pedestrian amenity.

This whole thing needs railway sanction, since anything across a railway track needs railway and railway safety commissioner approval.  As someone who uses the Whitefiled station once in a while to catch trains or see someone off, I completely agree.  It is a nightmare for pedestrians.  After taking a bus to Kadugodi bus stand, I use a small torch to safely make my trek to the railway station platform for my night train.

This is very valid issue. I can see hundreds of people crossing the railway line every day putting their life into risk. Authorties should consider this and initiate plans for alternate to cross the railway line.

It's very unsafe to cross the railway track to catch BMTC bus. People are taking too much risk to cross the railway track because of no option left out to recah the other side. I have seen women with children and senior citizens struggling to reach BMTC bus stop. I would request authorities to have immediate attention and plan for solution at the earliest possible.

Kadugodi Foot over bridge

up
185 users have liked.

The foot over bridge  is the most important requirement for the residents of Kadugodi as of now, The absence of this bridge is causing immense hardships to the people. There are so many patients who  visit the Ashram and  cannot walk over the stones on the tracks. Ladies who have to carry infants , small children are also subjected to torture while crossing the tracks. All this agony gets multiplied when goods trains are parked in such a way that there is no way for the people to cross. Either they take immense risk going under or over the halted trains or if they cannot do that they wait for long time before the trains move.. Sometimes i wonder how the railway people can be so negligient  and so unfriendly towards common people.

I hope some railway officers take note of it and act on this issue with utmost urgency..

Thanks Ramesh Menon for this inititative.

@ Ramesh Menon - Way to go - keep it up. Perhaps it would be a good idea to get as many RWA's in the area as possible to submit petitions to him, and keep meeting him. If you can rope in say 10 RWA's, fix a roster for two of them to visit him every week, by turn - meaning, one RWA rep will be seeing him only once a month, and he can't say 'how many times to tell you, etc'.

And, once you build this network, you can take on other issues also.

All the best.

Dear Ramesh,

I cannot agree more with you on this. We need to build pressure for immediate solution to this problem. It is so blatantly obvious that a pdestrian bridge is required. The authorities have to take immediate action - and your follow up in this regard is very commendable. Good Job.

I am thinking it might also be a good idea to pressurise the local MLA - Mr. Aravind Limbavali. I have already wriiten to him. So should others I think.

Let us know if we can do more - a follow up meeting with Mr. Anjaneya Reddy or something.

Let us do it together guys - we can make things much better - just need to keep our eyes open to problems.

Keep it up

Dear all, To Trespass or Not - is the question in my mind and many others who uses the Kadugodi railway and bus station. Thanks for the replies and support. But it should not end there. The situation is not favoring any resident, including those working with the railway or bus authorities. All have to use the same option, i.e. to cross the railway track, and many times trains stopped. The available optoin is the road overbridge is 2-3 kms longer route to reach the essential facilties like bus station, medical / pharmacy facilities, educational, religious centres etc. As per railway authorities, trespassing is punishable. What could be done with the support of legislators and administrative support at the earliest should be done without delay. Kindly generate momentum to this essential requirement.

fear of "Nirbhaya"

up
141 users have liked.

A day after a techie was run over by a train while crossing the tracks near Kadugodi on Tuesday, a 20-year-old woman was killed by a train on Wednesday morning near the Whitefield railway station.

- - - Angered at the “delay” by the railways in building a skywalk at the spot, residents of surrounding areas and members of various organisations blocked trains on the line all morning. They did not allow the police to clear the body. Residents alleged that close to 700 deaths had occurred at the spot in the past few years.

- - - It was only after an assurance by the Assistant Divisional Railway Manager that a skywalk would be built soon that the protestors dispersed. The ADRM also said the Railway Police personnel would be stationed at the spot. “We have set a deadline of six months for the skywalk. Tenders will be finalised in 10 days and work will begin in 20 days,” said Divisional Railway Manager Anil Agarwal.

For the full report in the New Indian Express, click here

From long, we at PRAJA have been demanding the execution of this work. It required these two deaths (in addition to the 700 odd past deaths), and the local people's agitation following the incidents, for the authorities to wake up.

Perhaps we need to put the "fear of Nirbhaya" into the minds of the powers that be to get them to move their back-sides.

I remeber Mr Shivanand from ITPL submitting petition to MP / MLA / SWR to  have Foot over bridge in  Sept'2012.

Its pathetic to see how  Educated IT people keep using dangerously without protesting not even single day at Whitefield station.

Why BBMP / UDD & SWR  wait till some lives are sacificed and keep blaming others for not releasing the amount.  Its high time that Indian Railway  take full  responsibility and economics / finance always takes over the priority of safety in case  of  Pedistrains.

Why Railway has so many plans for safety for Trains but when it comes to passenger facility,  it looks at state govt and does not want to spend money.

@ Ramesh Menon  -  Take a look here as to how a set of blind citizens got the central railway (in Mumbai) to build a foot-over-bridge near their locality - perhaps, the tactic holds a lesson for you.

And, with assembly elections coming up, now is the best tim to get all the candidates to commit to pursuing this to completion, say within a year of getting elected.

All the best.

Caution – Foot over bridge work in progress!

It’s an interesting site to note. At last the foot over bridge work in progress..

A big caution – as announced in the sign clearly. We all do not know how long it will take to finish.

As written wrongly, there are several wrong things associated with this construction project taken up by the authorities. It may continue for a longer time than we all expect.

So, watch your way. There are no barricades, no protection, no safety measures to safeguard public who move around towards the railway and bus station.

I am really amazed by the service standards and approach towards safety of one of the leading government organisation of India!.

With absolutely no lighting at night, I wish this project site does not become another accident spot.

Please Take Care, and also call all those who supported in the cry for this foot over bridge to continue watching and keep our cry loud and clear till it becomes a reality.

@ Ramesh Menon - OK - after all, there's some progress. I am sure your relentless pursuit has played a role, and to that extent, congratulations.

Yes, project management leaves a lot to be desired, even in prestigeous projects like NammaMetro, and to expect anything better here would be like asking for the moon. But, all the same, that needn't prevent anyone from pursuing it if he so desires.

Or rather, perhaps it's time we all collectively started demanding that all essential project details be made available on the excuting agency's web-site.

On a dangerous track

up
167 users have liked.

A common sight at many of the railway crossings in the City are chaotic traffic jams and people trying to squeeze in through the railway bar though a train is expected to pass by any moment.

One also can’t miss the sight of people carelessly walking across the tracks, without looking left or right to see, whether a train is approaching.

Many railways crossings, like those at Whitefield, Malleswaram, Hebbal and Kammanahalli-Fraser Town, face chaos despite the fact that these are manned by a guard.

There have also been many accidents in the recent past.

var vtn_publisher_id="1076"; var vtn_width="405"; var vtn_height="325"; var vtn_title_flag=1;

The authorities have tried to help ease the situation by constructing pedestrian over-bridges.

But many people avoid using this safe pathway as they do not want to climb stairs. Though the railways encourage people to use these bridges, their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Many tell Metrolife that these railway crossings have become a catalyst for traffic congestion. It is also important to take some precaution while crossing these junctions.

South Western Railways divisional railway manager S Mani says, “We have
constructed pedestrian over-bridges at two railway stations — Malleswaram and Bangalore East — where we used to have reports of people being run over by trains. As both the stations have only two tracks and two platforms, it was common to see commuters cross the tracks. So, we thought barricading the tracks was the only option
to stop this practice. And henceforth, everyone will have to compulsorily use the foot over-bridge.”

If the need arises, authorities will extend this system to other stations too. But Manju, a resident of Malleswaram, says that the issue must not only be addressed by the authorities but also by the people.

“Barricading the tracks will help to a certain extent but people must have the common sense to wait for the train to pass by and then cross. One can’t block all the tracks as some of them have traffic passing through,” he adds.

Agrees Dimple Goel, a professional, who has seen people carelessly cross the tracks at KR Puram and also faced traffic blocks near the crossing at Whitefield.

“Just watching some of these people squeeze in through at the last minute is terrible. It’s strange that they don’t understand how a single hit can cost a life. I feel the authorities have to keep a guard at every crossing and build more over-bridges so that people can use them,” she adds.

Pilith, a student, faces traffic jams every morning at the Kaggadaspura railway crossing as there is some train passing by every hour.

“There is no one guarding these areas. So people do as they please. It’s especially dangerous because it is a residential area. Apart from placing more guards at these crossings, the authorities must also place more signboards to make people aware of
the crossing,” he adds.

While the authorities say that they are doing their best to reduce accidents, people will have to be more responsible and do their bit to protect themselves.

Railway Crossing r adding traffic jams,  so solution is impliment Commuter Rail and eliminate all Railway crossings on priority in Bangalore

Baiyyappanahalli FOB & METRO may be longest Pedestrain facility

Finally after 30 months of METRO opening,  this Foot Over Bridge connecting Baiyyappanhallai METRO station - Baiyyappanahalli Railway Station - Kasturi Nagar got opened recently.

In fact this has enabled Kasturi Nagar resdents to walk upto Old Madras Road and this total length of Pedestain facility is worth. This should be around 500 Mtrs length having two FOB's.

This total pedestrain facility cross first Road, Railway Station, Metro station.  Only this does not cross busy old Madras road. This has cover all along and not like Mejestic,  also at same grade level thru out length except at entry & exit, where as Mejestic has 6 level grades down-up-up-down-down-up  connecting Gandi Bazar- KSRTC Bus Stand-BMTC.

This may be the longest safe pedestrain facility in Bangalore which we Bangaloreans  should be proud off.

Whats happening to Whitefield Railway station FOB,  by now this should be completed.

@bdonline - The FOB may have become operational. But, going by this report, apparently, the overall job has left a lot to be desired, from user perspective. As I have stated already, I would attribute it to lack of genuine public consultation. More and more, the Civil Society needs to demand that going forward.

Apparently the administration only woke up after people lost their lives in the crossing. Such is the state of apathy. To expect a desire for consultation with the public would be asking too much it seems.

The act of "public consultation" needs to be institutionalized . I can't agree with you more on your reference to Mohalla Sabhas in a related thread. I hope this becomes a reality in our lifetime at least :)

Don't get me started on the state of media in India. They are too busy getting politicians to bad mouth each other instead of actually going out in the field and do some serious news gathering.

Newer local media initiatives like "Citizen Matters" have covered this.

Another thing I fail to understand is why does BMTC terminate most of its buses at Kadugodi Bus Depot.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Kadugodi+Bus+Station/@12.9956587,77.7585232,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x3bae0e17bb7401fd:0xffb6d02f6de2611d

99% of the commuters who board the bus at Kadugodi Bus Stop actually reside beyond the railway track in areas like Belthur, Seegahali and Budigere Cross. It's high time BMTC develops another bus depot at a location like Budigere Cross, and terminate all its buses there at least for better commuter catchment if not for convenience to commuters.
