Maintenance of the storm water drainage system

When the boy Abhishake died BBMP attracted the ire of whole Bangalore. Subramanya some how was always in a fighting mood. He even put a case against the Loka Aukata himself, which attracted the wrath of the CM Mr. Yediyurappa. This time when a full grown painter too was a victim of the rain god fury he could not escape the ignominy of an immediate transfer. Subramnya as usual brushed off his misfortune in his usual way. See the report in today’s TOI here.

“This brings up another important question: should the BBMP strategists retreat into the drawing room with a fresh mapping of drainage and plug loopholes in an effective manner? Stitching a solution to save one’s skin is just not the way.

I am sure the citizens of Bangalore cannot but agree more with this. This is exactly what I liked in the TOI report here. Covered storm water drains especially the one which goes below a road (which is therefore difficult to reach) should always have a trap for the silt collection. This trap should be easily accessible. Even then it needs to be cleaned periodically. Are these obvious points far from being so obvious to the BBMP?

Do IRC manuals touch this aspect? How about the Roads manual being prepared by srkulhalli? Would praja like to brain storm in this post towards a better Strom water design and mainenance? VKM sir any innovations Ideya?

Storm Water Harvesting

No brainer at all!!

I can say this 1000 times. And its the least of common sense to understand that stormwater has to be managed not drained out of our house/area.

BBMP should enforce compulsory RWH and conduct periodic inspection to see citizens comply. I know that citizens will be the first to oppose this, as they prefer to contribute to the problem, not the solution. Typical.

For simple ideas on making this work throughtout our drain system, see www.youtube.com/watch

For more on RWH see www.youtube.com/profile

I dream of all newspapers and news channels relentlessly talking about this, so that RWH is widely implemented - in houses, commercial complexes, throughout drains (as shown in video), etc. A solution to the perennial problem.

Also, plastics choke our waterways, NatGeo listed "Surface water contamination" in its Top 10 pollution list.

Hoping to get SWH and RWH some attention here. Also, BBMP should appoint www.biome-solutions.com as its official partner on this project. I'm not part of biome business wise, but I reckon they are long due for some serious attention among citizens.

trimurthi avare,

Pl. have a look at this link of an earlier post wherein I have suggested some solution to effectively implement RWH without taxing the citizens - call it innovative idea or anything you want but they could be a scaleable ideas:

Aside from RWH

Even if we get RWH, a badly designed and maintained drainage system needs to be fixed. Silt traps etc are not rocket science yet we dont see them in our drainage system. It is purely the inability to plan the entire system put the heads down and implement it, the inability of the administrators to seek outside help for best practices. Regardless of who comes in or who goes out, our problems will remain problems if the administrators (collectively and individually) dont IMPLEMENT the plans.
