Implementation of Community Participation Law

Urban Development

Following is the text of the letter addressed by Dr Ashwin Mahesh to Sri Suresh Kumar, Minister for UD, on the subject, along with his preface. I thought Prajagalu may want to contribute to the debate, and hence this post.

Let's do it in our back-yard (LDIIOBY)!

Pollution

When it comes to the latest Garbage City tag, there was indeed a PIL filed. Fighting the negative tag was Neeraj Mishra, a resident of Indiranagar. Two years ago, Neeraj filed a PIL in the High Court of Karnataka when he found that garbage near his house had rented the place for free and the BBMP was letting it flourish.

Public can say 'no' to malls

Traffic jams

If you don't want a mall in your area, just put your foot down. If mayor D Venkateshmurthy has his way, citizens will have their say when a plea is made to the BBMP's town planning wing on malls coming up in residential zones.

Bangalore's global 'Hot-Spot' ranking

Economy

According to a study commissioned by the Citigroup, Delhi has been named the most competitive city in India for its demonstrated ability to attract capital, business, talent and tourists by a new Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) research report. Bangalore figures at 79 (behind Delhi @ 68; Mumbai @ 70).

This is what "being pro-active" is all about

Governance

Finding that BBMP was not quite equipped to clear the "tree trimmings" from the roadsides, fast enough, following the periodic exercises carried out by his men, particularly during the monsoon period, what does Mr Manivannan, the BESCOM, MD, do?

Stink-free Bangalore?

Pollution

The projects to clean up storm water valleys had been taken up under Environment Action Plan (EAP) Part A in 2004, but it was taken up again in 2010 as there was no progress.

Request for suggestions for inputs to CDP-2035

Urban Development

The following is the request sent out by the Namma Bengaluru Foundation (NBF) to all Civil Society and RWA groups, across the city, with their having taken the initiative to set up a dialogue with the BDA and other government agencies involved in the process of forming the Comprehensive Development Plan (now termed CDP-2035) for the city.

BBMP and the GIM

The cash-strapped Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will also set up shop at GIM venue to attract investors for 12 projects like managing the city's garbage and building skywalks. The civic body proposes to execute the projects, worth Rs 1,000 crore, under the public private partnership (PPP) model.

Police State

For holding a peaceful demonstration protesting the felling of some 40 odd trees (supposedly in the way of the BDA's signal-free corridor - check this), the state (through Koramangala PS) has now filed cases under Sec 143, 146, 147, 141, 341 read with 149, against 5 prominent mem

Oh, for a government job!

Governance

The government has instituted very strict labour laws. But, unable to comply with them, even as they remain the biggest employers in the country, government organisations are openly flouting the laws, as comes out clearly in each of the following cases:

Can we leave the decision of how our public spaces should evolve just to politicians?

For those dazzled by the Palika Bazaar in New Delhi, the-re's something to look forward to right here. BBMP is mulling over the construction of a similar bazaar below Freedom Park. The underground Palika Bazaar impressed mayor D Venkatesh Murthy who visited the place on May 19.

Over-milking the holy cows

If the statue (Ambedkar) is not shifted, the TBMs will have to be dismantled again at Vidhana Soudha station, towards the Vikasa Soudha gate, and parts have to be taken by shafts and launched from General Post Office end; the distance between these two stations being only a few meters would mean time and cost overrun.

Revised Master Plan - 2035

Urban Development

The Karnataka High Court had, on 25th Jan this year, issued an interim order staying further construction of commercial buildings in residential zones in Bangalore (check here), pursuant to this PIL filed

Is there a connect between Transport minister's plans and TAC's plans?

Bus

BMTC will soon be building close to 50 new bus stands at various points in the city which will offer state-of-the-art facilities like bus bays, canteen and waiting halls along with commercial space.
