ASI Nagarajappa and constables Venkatesh, Veerabhadraiah and Nagappa attached to Sanjaynagar police station were suspended, pending a departmental inquiry. On August 2, they barged into an apartment where a birthday party was being celebrated and illegally detained some persons and demanded money for their release.

One boy shot a video clip of what happened in the police station and shared it with media organizations. City police commissioner Shankar Bidari ordered a preliminary inquiry through the JC Nagar ACP, who found the officials guilty.

The police may not have any control over the city’s rising crime graph, but they are doing their own little sociological bit. For instance, the K R Puram sub-division police say they have reformed 119 habitual offenders in 2010, adding that none of the 119 has returned to a life of crime. According to the cops, their history sheets have now been closed. According to a senior officer in the city police commissioner’s office, the number of ‘reformees’ across the city may well be over 1,000. They have been gainfully employed as glass cutters, service station attendants, carpenters, mechanics, tailors, fitters, etc.

KR Puram ACP N Narasimhaiah said, “It was a really good experience to organise counselling sessions for offenders. As many of them are out on bail, it was necessary to create awareness amongst them. We chose 25 offenders from each police station in our jurisdiction. This year, 119 offenders were listed and it was good to know that none of them has yet been involved in any criminal activity.”

Stressing the civic role of citizens, a senior police officer said, “We have educated citizens who should spread awareness of the destructive nature of crime among young habitual offenders.”

Policing in Bangalore, under Shankar Bidri, has certainly set comparably good standards. And, these humane touches are what add to its overall standing.
