Commuter Rail

Imagine one day you woke up and sat down to have your favorite hot filter coffee while trying read thru the morning newpaper. Later you realized coffee has spilled on your clothes after reading these headlines. A miracle that you can believe to be true.

The newspaper provides the actual reasons for such reduction in pollution. They makes it clear that it was possible only due to citizen's uncompromising stand on having sustainable choices in daily commute for last 10 years. The more interesting stats again points to this became possible only due to city residents, administrators and government in deciding to opt for mass transit system like Commuter/Suburban Train system.

Is this possible? Yes, this news need not be an imaginary situation in the minds of few CRS enthusiasts. When one does a analysis of impact of mass transit system like commuter/suburban train system, the above painted scenario looks almost true and is possible. Let's take a look at how CRS would impact on decongestion and environment in short and longer run.

If we translate these outcomes in terms of those many LESS private vehicles on road, this what it looks like

NOTE: The number of public transport commuter trips have been assumed to remain constant @ 4.5 millions.

If other efforts to decongest city gets executed and completed on time, we are looking for city roads to look like this,

Impact on the Environment

We all know inefficiency of fuel consumption of 2-wheelers and cars in comparison to Bus and Trains. This gets more interesting in urban commute space.

In terms of CO2 that is emitted from different vehicles then defines the overall sustainability of the transport system that is operated in the city. Here is a rough estimates of CO2 emissions from 2 Wheeler, Car and Commuter Rail System (CRS).

2 Wheeler - 26 gms of CO2 per person per KM.

Car - 227 gms of CO2 per person per KM

Commuter Train - 22 gms of CO2 per person per KM

If we extrapolate these for the different phases of CRS, in terms of total commuter trips, this is what it would look like,

Year Total Commuter Trips 2 Wheelers
Tonne CO2
Cars
Tonne CO2
CRS
Tonne CO2
Car + 2Wheeler
Tonne CO2
Reduction
Tonne CO2
With CRS - Phase 1A 2016 4000000 89.2871906 250.2245959 101.4126115 339.5117865 238.0991749
With CRS - Phase 1 2018 8000000 178.5743812 500.4491917 202.8252231 679.0235729 476.1983498
With CRS - Phase 2 2021 15000000 334.8269647 938.3422345 380.2972933 1273.169199 892.871906
With CRS - Phase 3 2025 25000000 558.0449412 1563.903724 633.8288221 2121.948665 1488.119843

These numbers and comparative figures adds to the benefits of having mass transit system to sustain the growth and development of the region around Bengaluru. Among the benefits, decongestion and environment impact must be taken into consideration at a higher level than economic benefits. The environmental impacts directly translates into public health and productivity.

@Syed,  Thanks for sharing  Decongestiona and  its impact on pollution.

Citizens need to come forward  and  help each others and adopt the public transport system, then only we can have pollution less in our city.

Example itself  :  This Sunday,  had been to Chinnasway Stadium,  generally people go their during IPL  matches. I had to visit due to one of my relative function in one of the Halls of the stadium.

Stadium Gallery was connected to Hall,  saw Ranaji match going on. Complet stadium, was  empty except few 100  people.   Attendent their told me,  gallery where we were standing costs Rs 7000 during IPL match.  But  for Ranaji matches,  entry is free.

I was just wondering,  we do not have space to sit and spend quality time on MG road,  but just 500 meters,  complet stadium was empty  and  view was really wonderfull.

This is where  I felt  KSCA  had missing good opportunity to get more people to staudium from MG road   and  Citizens of  Bangalore r missing good place to spend quality time just adjacent of  MG road.

The votaries for a suburban train system in Bengaluru have got a shot in the arm with the Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Transport Planning (CiSTUP), Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, presenting a paper saying that such a network can ease traffic congestion in the city.

This paper published in the proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) in November states that a suburban railway network connecting the city with the surrounding towns of Mandya, Ramanagaram, Tumakuru, Doddballapur, Chikballapur, Malur, Bangarpet and Hosur is the most suitable alternative to address the 'disaster scenario' of traffic in the city.

Speaking to Mirror, CiSTUP ex-chairman Prof T G Sitharam says that if such a system is put in place, there will be a considerable decrease in the number of commuters who travel daily to Bengaluru on these routes.

Thanks for the full support from CiSTUP Ex- Chairman Prof T G Sitaram,  and efforts of few citizens campaign from Syed, Naveen, Pranav, Sathya, Ragotham Rao, Hemanth, recently  Vaidyanathan, Amith Pullavor, Bhavin Gandhi has taken this project to higher pressure level.

With Political support from Ananthkumr, PC Mohan, Prof Rajeev Gowda, G S Basavaraj, Ashwin Mahesh,  Industry body support from  BCIC, FKCCI,  ELCIA, BIAL, WEPPIA, WACIA  now the Bangalore Suburban Rail should get the much needed clearance from Railway Board with any secound thought.
