On May 22, BIAL completed first year of its operation. Major news papers have reported on BIAL's 1st anniversary. Going by these news reports, so far BIAL's performance isa mix bag of both positives and negatives. The silver lining is the operators have shown willingness to work with their customers including Industries & commerce.

"..Has BIAL reviewed its expansion plan, taking into consideration traffic growth, projected traffic, and investors’ interest in a recessionary climate?
Our plans to expand the apron, which now has place for 42 aircraft, has been approved in the recent board meeting. The expansion will be on the west side, and the capacity will be increased to 68. It will take one year to complete this project.
To build the second runway, the lead time of 54 months is required. At the moment, we are using only 60 per cent of the present runway. In the peak hour, there are 23 movements whereas the capacity is to go above 30 movements.
Hopefully, the traffic will start growing in one year’s time. With our estimate of traffic, we will be able to cope well till the year 2012."...

This was BIAL's CEO Marcel Hungerbuehler's  response to the question of BIAL expansion plans.

On the other hand, this one sentence in the report says it all - "The silver lining is the operators have shown willingness to work with their customers including Industries & commerce". That's the difference between when the airport was in the hands of government owned AAI/ HAL consortium, and now when it is with privately owned BIAL.

On a comparison, see the amount of gyaan PRAJAgalu are expounding on on public bus transport and power distribution services. If these are also privatised, perhaps we can all engage in more productive pursuits, like bird watching - your kind, of course :))).

PS: Meanwhile, can we have a summary of the 21st May BCIC meet?

20 Year Growth Projections

Happen to read the Devesh's take on BIAL's one year anniversary. He has promised to post a series of blog posts coinciding with BIAL. I find them to be very balanced and true to the facts on ground. This is what he had mentioned in his blog on BIAL's 20 year air traffic projections.

"...I recently sat down with senior officers of the airport operator Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), and plugged in their projections for the next 6 years with historic data to develop a 20 year chart of air traffic performance. The momentum of growth has only been interrupted. Bangalore air traffic will grow as will Bengaluru International Airport..."

Upfront, I should make it clear that I have always preferred to have the BIAL over the HAL (as though, Its in my hands :) ). BIAL will provide us an oppportunity that HAL airport could not provide - expand the airport!!

Murali-sir, please dont think that BIAL, a private player is receptive to its customers. Devesh didnt mean you and me as customers of BIAL; its the industries and 'commerce'. BIAL will always belive, and rightly so, that they understand aviation and airport operations much betters than us. If at all BIAL has been kind and polite to the industries and politicos, it is because they determine the 'expansion' plans of BIAL!! The airport hotel, convention center etc are going to the lifelines of BIAL's revenues, and they are more interested in getting it done.

Politicians bow  and listen to us every few years. Its BIALs time with its 'bosses'!!!
