KSRTC's AWATAR

Whenever I try to book a ticket on the KSRTC's website online, it always says 'Server Busy'. This was inagurated grandly by KSRTC to show that they are capable just like Indian Railways, but, their franchisees KSRTC Booking Counters were worried.  To make the booking only through Franchisees and have online booking for namesake, whenever  you login to KSRTC website with your login, you will get a server busy 'clean message'. This is not from the server, but from a  very good responsive page with delibrate message - Not any HTTP 500 or any other message.

Local shuttles and BMTC - Example Whitefield

Public Transport

Let me try a detailed example of how BMTC can extend the reach of its services, without adding tons of buses to its fleet. It involves investing in identified trunk routes, and then in planning local shuttles. Lets dig a bit deep into Whitefield.

Say we identify the trunk routes between Whitefield and rest of Bangalore as Southbound (towards Koramangala E-City, Westbound (towards CBD via Airport road), and Northbound (towards Banaswadi, Hennur). Call these trunk routes, and put a bus every 10-15 minutes on each. Here are the three routes (indicative, not exact):

Government Education in Bangalore

At times it seems that Bangalore citizens have forgotten that their government schools exist.

More than half of the schools in Bangalore are private unaided schools, while in the entire state of Karnataka, 81% of schools are government schools. Government schools are seen as a school of last resort, and face high dropout. Children who do survive government schooling often end up without basic skills -- reading, writing, and arithmetic. Still, there are more than 200,000 children attending government schools in our city.

Joys of public transport

Public Transport

Public transport is fun. Sometimes I think of our lives as bubbles. In the house with familiar people, in the office with known colleagues, and in the car or on the bike alone, we may not really be mingling-connecting with our city, isn't it? That philosophical take apart, here are some pictures and experiences after trying BMTC a lot (upto 4-5 times a day) over last month.

Meanwhile, NH7 turns a death trap

NH-7 is turning out to be a complete death trap. On the way back from the airport last night, we reached Chikajala only to find traffic stopped. Heard an ambulance, etc.

Found out that we reached about 15 mins after a fatal accident - a hit and run. Apparently (and I don't know for sure) a City Cab had hit a pedestrian and sped off. The locals were furious and understandably. They had blockaded the traffic. They were taking all the Meru and City Cabs to one side and were asking the passengers to get off. They came to the window of each taxi that passed and said "Naale inda nidana (slow from tomorrow)".
